We’re running two very special photography classes in Albany on Saturday 17 November at the Vancouver Arts Centre. These hands-on workshops are aimed at Albany and Great Southern photographers who want to take their photography to the next stage, by learning to use their flash speedlight effectively, or shoot great portraits in natural light.

If you have already done a beginner’s DSLR workshop or have taught yourself the basics of DSLR photography, and are looking to take the next step in your photography, then these workshops will get you there!

Workshop #1: Understanding Your Flash Speedlight

Presenter: Seng Mah
Level: Intermediate
Duration: 10am – 1pm
Dates: Saturday 17 November
Cost: $150 inc GST (or book in for both workshops for $270)

Are you confused or frustrated by your flash speedlight? Do you struggle with getting the right exposure or the right look when you’re using your speedlight? Come join us to learn the inner secrets of your flash speedlight and turn your fear of flash into a love of flash!

In Understanding your Flash Speedlight, you will learn how to take control of your flash speedlight and use it to add impact and intensity to your photographs. Whether you like shooting portraits, happy snaps or weddings, you’ll learn how to master your flash and use it creatively and effectively!

You’ll learn how to:

• Use your flash in its e-TTL/i-TTL modes
• Control flash exposure using flash exposure compensation
• Use Front (first-curtain) vs Rear (second-curtain) flash
• Activate high speed sync on your speedlight
• Use your flash as key light vs fill light
• Implement bounce flash indoors and outdoors
• Use reflectors
• Using flash modifiers
• Balance ambient and flash exposures for outdoor shooting

This workshop includes your shooting with a model on location. If you’ve ever wanted to learn about using your flash effectively, then sign up for this workshop!

Note: You will need your own DSLR, lenses and speedlight flash (external flash). We recommend that you use in-brand speedlights with your camera (ie. not third party or off-market brands) to ensure that your flash can communicate with your DSLR. Your speedlight needs to have a flash head that can tilt and rotate.

Workshop #2: Natural Light, Natural Portraiture

Duration: 1.30pm – 4.30pm

Location: Vancouver Arts Centre, 85 Vancouver St, Albany
Maximum participants: 12 (6 places available)

Come and learn how to take great outdoor portraits with your DSLR without the fuss of flashes, strobes or artificial light. This hands-on practical workshop is all about how you can make use of natural light to take gorgeous portraits! You’ll work with our model in both interior and exterior locations and learn about:

• obtaining the right exposure for natural light portraits
• finding the right light for portraits
• positioning your portrait subject in relation to available light
• controlling subject to background focus
• posing your subject
• using a reflector
• finding and using natural reflectors

Join us in an afternoon of learning, shooting and laughing as we show you the top tips and tricks of the trade in obtaining outdoor portraits with that “Wow” factor.

Note: Participants need to have a basic familiarity with shooting in Aperture Priority and Manual Exposure. You need to be able to:

• Set your Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO manually
• Select and set your exposure metering mode on your DSLR (evaluative metering, centre-weighted metering, spot metering)
