The Mastering your Camera Workshop focuses on giving you greater control and confidence in your use of your camera via 1-on-1 personalised tuition.

This workshop is designed for learners who are new to digital photography, and who would like to develop their skills and understanding with your camera. If you've been shooting on the Automatic or Scene Exposure modes (Portrait, Landscape, Action, Night etc) on your camera, then this lesson will show you how you can take control of the more creative modes on your camera. Included is a set of comprehensive notes for you to take home and review.

This 1-on-1 workshop gives you the opportunity to learn at your own pace, with a three-hour lesson specifically created for your own learning curve. Having your own unique workshop will ensure that you don't become lost in "information overload" and that you have time to revisit topics where you require further assistance. You're free to ask questions during the workshop and we'll make sure you understand each topic before we move on to the next.

What you will learn:

  • How to handle your camera for effective shooting.
  • Controlling white balance for correct colour balance (no more weird colour casts in your photos!).
  • Selecting the right Picture Style for the image you'd like to create.
  • Using the right lenses and focal lengths for different types of photography.
  • How to get creative with perspective in your photographs.
  • Taking control of auto focus: selecting the right auto focus mode and auto focus area for your photography.
  • Taking pin sharp photos of your subject by controlling focus.
  • Keeping moving subjects in focus by using focus tracking.
  • How to use continuous shooting (paparazzi-style shooting) effectively.
  • Depth of field and controlling it by using the Aperture.
  • Shooting in Aperture Priority: when and why.
  • Aperture values to obtain different degrees of depth of field.
  • Photographing motion using Shutter Speed.
  • Shooting in Shutter Priority: when and why.
  • How to avoid blurry images caused by slow shutter speed.
  • Light and ISO: shooting under low lighting conditions.
  • The relationship between Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO in exposure: how to get the right exposure for your shots.
  • Assessing exposure using the Histogram
  • Using exposure compensation to correct for over- or under-exposure.
  • Why your camera stuffs up: understand the middle grey rule and compensating for it.
  • Shooting in Manual Exposure: when and why.
  • Taking full control of your camera by shooting in Manual Exposure.

I had the pleasure of having a 1 on 1 lesson with Seng, and I must say that it was definitely worth it!!! My confidence has grown dramatically since the lesson, the quality of my pictures has improved 100%. Seng was a great teacher he was very approachable and extremely knowledgeable and I couldn’t thank him enough. I would recommend this lesson to everyone. (Tamara Armstrong)

Thank you Seng for providing such an informative and engaging workshop on the use of our DSLR cameras. You were able to explain a range of topics in a way that easy to understand and you provided excellent examples to illustrate what you were saying. I originally signed up as a refresher course as I haven't had any formal training in some time, but I left with a whole set of new skills that I can't wait to put to use. Thank you again! (Matthew Potts, Comet Bay College)

The 1-on-1 was very informative and motivational. Seng is eloquent and teaches calmly, with indepth knowledge and experience. An absolute must for anyone who wants to learn how to capture memories and events, utlising all aspects available from their equipment. 3 extremely valuable hours of education!Thank you Seng. (Marlene Ashley)

This was a fantastic experience. You were so patient in giving direction which made it easier to learn. I now get so much more from my camera. Great course. Thanks (Shandelle McLean)

For anyone contemplating photography and who want to make use of the camera settings then I highly recommend you attend this course with Seng Mah. He will guide you through most of your camera settings but more importantly get you to put them to good use enabling you to turn a reasonable shot into a great shot. In my view you cannot beat a hands on approach, when Seng says "Ok, take a portrait of me with a blurred background" the moment of truth arrives, you have to set the camera up and take the picture, taking into consideration, the available light, contrast, aperture settings, shutter speed and ISO as well as focus points and composition. After a couple of attempts it starts to fall into place. Of course that is just one example there are so many other types of shots you will learn about. If you are keen to move on from "auto" then contact Seng, you will be surprised and have a heap of fun. (Philip Dalton)

For anyone who permanently has their camera on 'auto' mode I definitely recommend this workshop! After reading my manual several times and trying to teach myself how to use my camera properly for over 2 years, I FINALLY feel like I have an understanding of how it works and how to get the most of of it. Initially I was nervous of appearing like a real camera dummy and worried that the workshop would be too technical or difficult for me, however Seng immediately put me at ease. He has a way of explaining everything (even complex technical points) simply and clearly in a way which actually made sense to me, and tailored the content to suit my photography requirements. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and after a bit of practice I will certainly be coming back for one of his other workshops. (Sharne Pretorious)

Thank you Seng, for the great one-on-one that you did with me at such short notice. The way you explained everything so clearly and showed examples with the camera opened up everything I read and also dispelled a few myths about photography. I would recommend this course to everyone. I tried online courses but without hands on experience it became overload of knowledge and baffling where to start. Seng steered me through and explained everything practically so I am now looking forward to taking great photographs by knowing how and why we use the settings to improve the end photograph. Thank you once again. (Lynn Nagle)

Great day with Seng. I have finally been shown and now understand what all those other settings are on the camera. It was the best way for me to understand the How and Why during a 1-on-1 session. Now I am comfortable with the idea of using the camera in the different Manual modes to allow for photogorahy to move the the next level. Thanks Seng! (Dave Gray)

Seng was an excellent teacher. He explained things very clearly, and although I was out of my comfort zone most of the time, I felt at ease, motivated and inspired. I had read through my camera manual, but the manual didn’t explain the hows and whys like Seng did. I came out of the session with the basic knowledge of photography I’d been lacking, reinforced the theory behind some things I’d been doing instinctively, learned what I had been doing wrong, identified ways to improve, and gained confidence to use my camera controls rather than leaving it in full-auto mode. Seng also gave me a set of comprehensive notes so I didn’t have to worry about writing anything down during the class, which was great, as I could then have a camera in my hands the entire time rather than pen and notepad. (Cynthia Chew - The Food Pornographer)

Having attended the 1-on-1 course with my new canon 600D, I was amazed at the wealth of information Seng put before me to achieve the total understanding and control of my camera. His teaching was concise and to the point and we didn’t proceed to the next stage until he was sure I had grasped what he had explained thus far. I couldn’t recommend this course more highly from all points of view and the 1-on-1 facility suited my desire to learn quickly and completely. His follow up with suggestions on ancillary equipment was appreciated… A1 all round!!! (Gary Barnard)

Thank you Seng for my awesome 1 on 1 session yesterday, I am still so excited with my new found skills! My two dogs and cat however, are not as enthused as I thought they would be. I honestly thought they would love to have their own personal paparazzi following them around the house for hours on end!?!! No!?!? (Lauren Brown)

I can not tell you how helpful this was. It is so refreshing to work with a photographer, that makes you feel at ease and can talk about anything in such a down-to-earth and approachable way!

I have really enjoyed this learning time with you and feel that you shed so much light on technical as well as business matters for me. You have such great uplifting and empowering way, it is fantastic!

Even though I feel I still have a way to go on the practical side of things you certainly smoothed the way for me and provided me with some great knowledge and tools. Thanks so much for taking that time. (Katrin James)
