We’ll look at how to work with backgrounds, controlling depth of field and the do’s and don’ts of natural light portraiture. You’ll need to have a portrait style length to get the most out of this camera, for example, a zoom kit lens (55-250mm), a 50mm prime lens for your DSLR or 25mm prime lens if you are using a micro 4/3 camera.

If you’re into photography and want to find out how you can shoot better, then join us for a session that will show you how you can become a better photographer, regardless of the camera you use. It’s all about seeing, working with light, composing, angles, timing and telling stories. Johannes and Seng will take you through a presentation that will inspire and give you plenty of ideas, and then we’ll take you on an afternoon photo walk in Fremantle where you can put what you have learned into practice! This event is suitable for all types of photographers, especially new ones, and you can use any type of camera at this session. Please dress for the weather and make sure you have comfortable walking shoes.

Night Shots

Suitable for: Beginners – Intermediate photographers
Camera type: DSLRs, mirrorless, micro 4/3s.
Time: 6.30pm – 8.30pm
Venue: Meet at the front of Whaler’s Tunnel at the end of High St, Fremantle.
Price: $60
Maximum number of participants: 12 (10 places available)
Instructor: Seng Mah with John Marshall
We finish off with an epic workshop dedicated to night photography. Join us as the light drops and we ready our cameras and tripods for some low-light, night photography. Learn how to shoot night scenes lit by artificial lights (street light, lights in buildings etc) and how to work your camera settings to obtain the best night shots your camera and lenses can produce. We’ll be exploring Fremantle on foot and shooting some of its locations under cover of night — you’ll notice how the lay of the land changes under cover of darkness. Add in some light trail and light painting photography into the mix to create dazzling images and you’ll have a night photography workshop to remember. You’ll need a tripod and remote shutter release for this workshop. The best lens to use in this workshop is a wide-angle lens.
