Course pre-requisites: You’ll need to be familiar with shooting in Manual Exposure mode (manual control of Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO).

This workshop is designed to show you, step-by-step, how to get going with your battery flash units. You may already have invested in these battery flash (eg. Jinbei or Godox) but still can’t work out how to set up and use them; or you may be thinking of investing in battery flash for your portraiture and product lighting. Either way, you want to learn how to use them effectively and professionally!

The best thing about these units is that they are fully portable, which means you don’t need to rely on mains supply. Packing more power than conventional speedlights and just as portable, these lights (eg. Jinbei, Godox, Elinchrom) allow for exceptional creative and professional quality lighting, allowing you to shoot in the studio and on location. But learning how to set up and use your battery flash units can still feel a little intimidating, especially if you’re new to this kind of lighting.

This workshop will show you how to get started and get shooting with a minimum of fuss. We’ll explain the set up process in every day language, and then you’ll join in a hands-on shoot with our model to learn how best to set up these lights for effective portrait lighting. We’ll even cover 2 to 3 great portrait lighting setups that you can use in your own studio!

What you will learn
  • Setting up the lights: initial configuration and power control.
  • Using groups and channels.
  • TTL vs Manual Flash modes
  • High speed sync modes and Freeze modes (available on Jinbei lights)
  • Using lighting modifiers
  • Lighting styles: feathering, loop lighting, rembrandt lighting, key and fill lighting.

What you’ll need
  • Your interchangeable lens camera
  • A portrait length lens (at least 50mm-135mm for full frame sensors)
  • Notebook and a pen.
  • You don’t need to bring a tripod to this workshop.

Note: The practical segments of this workshop will use Jinbei HD400 Pro lights, but the content is transferable across popular battery flash units, including Godox.
