Shooting the Night Fantastic - Night Photography Workshop

The “Shooting the Night Fantastic” is a 2-hour workshop that will give you the skills and know-how to shoot night scenes and night-scapes by mastering long exposure night photography! You’ll learn how to shoot long exposure night landscapes and how to bring your images to vivid life by using light trail and light painting photography. And we will have all the history, culture and glamour of Cathedral Square to use as our backdrop – from photographing St George’s Cathedral, to shooting the old Public Trustee Building, illuminated artwork and gleaming modern facades – we’ll find many things to light up the night while we shoot here.

You will learn the techniques for shooting light painting and light trails in your photography, so that you can create spectacular and surreal photographs.

You will learn about:

  • Camera settings and tips for photographing long exposure night landscapes.
  • The relationship between Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO in light painting photography.
  • The tools, toys, tips and tricks used to create light trails and light spins.
  • Methods for adding light painting to your night-scapes.
  • Composition tips for shooting night scenes.

To get the best results from this workshop, you will need:

  • A DSLR or mirrorless camera (with manual exposure and bulb exposure controls) with a wide angle (eg.10-20mm, 18-55mm, 16-35mm) or medium telephoto (eg. 24-70mm, 18-200mm) lens.
  • A remote shutter release (either with a cable or wireless).
  • A stable tripod, with a head that can tilt and rotate easily. Important: Your camera must sit very firmly on the tripod (ie. camera cannot “wobble”).
  • Optional: Flashlight (will be handy) and a small stool (to sit on, unless you’re comfortable sitting on the ground).

Come and join us for a night of very creative photography while you learn to master the Art of night photography and light painting!

Note: Participants need to have a basic familiarity with shooting in Manual exposure. You need to be able to set your Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO manually
