If you have always wondered how to shoot night scenes and night scapes, then this is the workshop for you! “Shooting the Night Fantastic” will show you how to master night photography, long exposures and light painting!

The 15th February is the night of the full moon, so we’ll start by showing you how to photograph the full moon as it rises over Bunbury using Manual Exposure and using your camera’s spot metering mode.

Once the moon has risen, we’ll head down to the Back Beach for some night landscape photography, where you will learn how to take some very long exposures of the coastal landscape lit by the light of the full moon.

We’ll then show you the techniques for shooting light painting and fire trails in your photography, so that you can create spectacular and surreal photographs.

You will learn about:

  • Using your camera’s manual exposure mode and spot metering for photographing the full moon.
  • Camera settings and tips for photographing long exposure night landscapes.
  • The relationship between Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO in light painting photography.
  • The tools, toys, tips and tricks used to create orbs, domes, flames, sparks and spins.
  • Methods for adding light painting to your nightscapes.

To get maximum results from this workshop, you will need:

  • A DSLR or similar camera with both telephoto (at least 200mm) and wide angle (10-24mm) lenses.
  • A stable tripod, with a head that can tilt and rotate easily.
  • A remote shutter release (either with a cable or wireless), so that you can keep your shutter open for more than 30 seconds.
  • A flashlight.
  • Your imagination and sense of fun!

Come and join Seng and the crew from Venture Photography Workshops for a night of very creative photography while you learn to master the Art of Light Painting and Light Trail Photography!

Note: Participants need to have a basic familiarity with shooting on Manual exposure. You need to be able to:

  • Set your Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO manually
  • Select and set your exposure metering mode on your DSLR (evaluative metering, centre-weighted metering, spot metering)
