Light Magic in Freo!
Take 15 enthusiastic photographers, 8 models, 1 make up artist, studio strobes, theatre lights, speedlights, reflectors, softboxes, umbrellas and a historic port city and you have the makings of a photographic extravaganza known as… Light Magic!
Light Magic Fremantle, the second in the Light Magic series of weekend photography workshop, unwound in Fremantle over the 17th and 18th of October.
And what a weekend it was!
Kicking off with a bit of studio strobing, the weekend progressed to a session of vintage Hollywood portraiture, where our models Mikka and Matt were suitably kitted out in period costume and placed under theatre lights for some old style photographic portraiture. Looking hot (in more ways than one as the theatre lights were HOT), our models channeled the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Montgomery Cliff, much to the delight of the attending photographers.
Then, we took the lights outside, with a bit of location strobing using speedlights, modifiers and reflectors, before heading out to the West End of Fremantle for some street fashion shooting. Thanks to our creative makeup artist, Julz, Mikka and Matt became spokespeople for an 80s punk revival as they were photographed against heritage buildings on Cliff Street.
A highlight of the weekend was a photographic challenge set by fine art nude photographer, Jon Miller, who set participants the task of photographing our talented and gorgeous fine art model, Ali. Some photographers were nervous at the prospect of participating in their first fine art nude shoot, but all of them took the challenge and performed admirable.
Backed by a couple of sessions on digital post-production, the weekend workshop wound up with a shoot down at Port Beach, with a bevy of beauties and brawn! Models Jes, Justine, Frank, Duff and Casey donned swimming cossies and beach wear, and set themselves the envious task of lounging around in the surf and sand while photographers took their pictures. A number of splendid images resulted with photographers balancing flash with ambient light, or creating dramatic swimsuit photographs by dialing down their ambient exposure to make the models pop!
