Highlights and Faves from 2018!
2018 is about the wind to a close and I feel as if I need to create a valediction to what has been a pretty phenomenal year. 2018 was the year in which we launched our very popular mini-workshops, which offered short, 2-hour hands-on workshops at a very affordable price point. It was also the year that we ramped up our photography tours — running four tours this year, three of which sold out. I also undertook a couple of location scouting trips this year, making it a total of seven overseas adventures in 2018. Phew!
2018 is also a year of goodbyes, as I finished up my partnership with the Fremantle Centre of Creative Photography and my collaboration with Cultural Connections Photography Tours. Both organisations have been so much fun to be a part of during the course of 2018, but 2019 and beyond is about my focusing on Venture Photography Workshops and Tours and working harder to make sure that the workshops and tours we run are just perfect for you – our participants and guests!
Key highlights in 2018 (apart from the tours and overseas trips), included running a number of fantastic events in collaboration with our very good friends at Team Digital, including the “Landscape Inspiration Weekend” in July, “All Creatures Great and Small” event and the “Creating Connections” travel portraiture seminar with the always amazing and always inspirational Nico Marino. I was also part of the Travel Collective Exhibition at Team Digital, where five Perth-based travel photographers were invited to exhibit five images each.
Thanks to Camera Electronic, we also attended Photo Live Expo 2018 and had a table where we met with and connected with a host of enthusiastic photographers in Perth! We wrapped up the year with another great event — “Hit the Streets” — which was run with the support of Camera Electronic.
We welcomed a few new faces to our Venture crew this year: starting with Jennifer Smith who looks after our marketing and social media, as well as assists with our events; Erica Serena who runs some of our Beginner’s Digital Photography mini-workshops, Brian Kinson, who joins me in running some of our landscape photography events, and Paul Richardson who assists in a our mini-workshops.
And, of course, 2018 brought with it news that I had been awarded the 2018 Documentary Professional Photographer of the Year at the WA Professional Photography Awards with my portfolio of images taken during the 2018 India photography tour. On top of this, I scored finalist in 2018 Travel Professional Photographer of the Year at the same awards. So, it’s been a bountiful year!
It’s no surprise that most of my fave images from this year were taken overseas – in India, New Zealand, Italy, Croatia, Bali, Kenya and Mongolia. But there have also been favourite images taken at home here in Fremantle, Perth and surrounds. Enjoy the images below and as we tick over to 2019, I’d like to wish you a very Happy New Year and may 2019 bring on amazing photographic experiences and opportunities for you!
