Lightroom Tip: Crop overlays to help with composition
Here’s a simple, yet nifty, Lightroom Tip that helps you compose your final image during editing. When you select the Crop tool in Lightroom, a number of “Crop Overlays” become available to you. These overlays superimpose an overlay over your image that shows you how you can crop your image based on various compositional guidelines, such as the rule of thirds, golden spiral and so on.
You can cycle through the different compositional guides by pressing the letter “O” key – in sequence, the compositional guidelines include the rule of thirds, diagonals, triangles, golden ratio, golden spiral, aspect ratio and grid (not shown in the attached image).
You can also press SHIFT+O to cycle through the orientation of each crop overlay; useful for the triangle and spiral overlays.
Use these overlays to assist you in cropping your image to suit.
