Spring in the City Photowalk

As the breath of Spring sweeps down over the city, it’s time to hit the pavement and parks with our cameras in tow, and see what we can find and capture in the City of Perth!

This photowalk kicks off with our meeting outside the City of Perth Library (in Cathedral Square) at 10.30am and we will meander our way to Supreme Court Gardens and then down to the Bell Tower at Barrack Square.

This photowalk embraces all genres of photography — from architecture to street to nature and urban landscapes. The important thing isn’t so much the subject as is it light, form, moment and feeling.

I’d like to help train your eye to look beyond subject and scene, and to hone in on what makes a great photograph — the confluence of light, setting, moment and (finally) subject.

Many photographers are what I call content-focused photographers; in other words, they look for “interesting subjects” instead of “interesting light”. Light makes or breaks a photograph, so it’s my hope that this photo walk will give you some tips to help you become a light-based photographer, instead of a content-based photographer.

Join me on a ramble in Spring and pick up some new tips and tricks.

This event is perfect for photographers of all skill levels — all you need is your camera and a lens that allows you to shoot wide as well as close ups, so if you have a cool zoom lens, bring that along.

Recommended equipment:

Your camera and similar image-capturing device. Smartphones and analogue cameras are welcome!
Zoom lenses that allow you to cover around 24-105mm focal length ranges, eg. 24-105mm, 18-200mm and similar lenses.
Fully charged camera/smartphone battery.
Memory card for digital cameras.

Note: This event will run even if the weather is a little wet. In the event that the weather is completely inclement (heavy rain, a deluge), this event will be cancelled and tickets refunded.
