Urban Long Exposures Workshop

Urban Long Exposures banner

Date: Saturday 8 August 2026
Duration: 4pm – 5.30pm
Price: $120
Maximum participants: 12
Location: Yagan Square

Let’s create something new — long exposures in the urban environment!

Long exposures has long been associated with natural landscapes, where slow shutter speeds are used to blur the movement of water for that silk-smooth effect. But it has far wider application than this!

Join us for an afternoon shooting urban long exposures — where what’s moving are people and vehicles, which we will blur (or vanish completely) using long exposures, while retaining the eye-catching architecture of structures and buildings.

It’s a new way of seeing, and capturing, the urban scene.

You’ll learn how to select urban scenes for long exposures, and how varying the duration of the long exposure creates different images — suggest movement or motion, or make crowds ghostly.

We will kick off in Yagan Square, and then shoot at a number of open locations so that you’ll have the opportunity to capture unique urban settings in long exposure.

Recommended equipment:

  • Your DSLR or mirrorless interchangeable lens camera.
  • Lenses in the 16- 55mm range (or crop-frame equivalent).
  • An ND1000 filter (ND400 filters are also suitable). This workshop is not suitable for filters with less density.
  • Fully charged camera/smartphone battery.
  • Memory card for digital cameras.
  • Tripod.
  • Optional: Shutter release (or you can use the 2-second timer on your camera)

This is a hands-on event, so you’ll learn by shooting. It’s the best way to learn. Places are strictly limited to 12 participants.

Note: In the event that the weather is very inclement (heavy rain), this event will be cancelled and tickets refunded.
