So you’ve done our beginner’s “Getting Started in Photography” workshop (or a similar course) and are wondering what’s next? How do you maximise your camera in order to take your photography to the next level?
This workshop will show you how the experts do it, by giving you a greater understanding of the advanced functions of your camera, that will allow you to take more creative photographs and to be more responsive to challenging photographic situations, such as high contrast scenes, low light and moving subjects.
You’ll learn to master light, exposure and focus, and discover the benefits of gaining greater control and understanding of your camera!
You will learn about:
- The power of using spot metering to obtain absolute control of your exposure.
- The techniques to increase your ability to lock focus on moving subjects, especially fast and erratically moving subjects.
- Shooting and creating light trails in your photography.
- Obtaining long exposures by understanding and using a range of filters.
- Techniques for shooting the night sky, to prepare you for the next Milky Way photography season.
- Using Bulb Mode to obtain ultra-long exposures – great for star trails and making movement vanish.
- Focus stacking: for when you need to obtain infinitely deep depth of field.
- The advantages (and disadvantages) of using bracketing on your camera – when, why and how to do it.
- How to shoot and create a panorama with your camera.
“Advanced Photography Techniques” is a hands-on workshop and you will participate in a number of shooting activities during the day.
What you’ll need
- A DSLR, Micro Four Thirds, mirrorless or similar camera with manual controls (P, A, S and M modes) and interchangeable lenses.
- Your camera manual.
- A spare battery.
- A clean memory card or a spare card.
- A tripod.
- Optional: A shutter release (cable or remote control).

- Thanks to both Seng and Russell for an excellent workshop. From the start to finish the advanced workshop was both interesting and informative. Seng, you pitched the course at a perfect level, and no question went unanswered throughout the day. For anyone who wants to take full advantage of their camera, I would thoroughly recommend the Venture Photography Advanced workshop. Russell, great modelling mate and you are the application guru. Without a doubt; I will only be using my camera in manual mode from now on. (Steve O’Halloran)
- Venture Photography’s Advanced Photography Techniques Workshop run by Seng is one the best workshops I have attended. Seng definitely provides value for money, he makes it interesting and I came away knowing far more than before. I would definitely recommend his courses. I have asked Santa for money for Christmas so that I can do another one. (Janet Gee)
- Thank you so much. Your teaching style is very clear and it just all makes sense. I will certainly practice what I learnt today until it all becomes second nature. Today was truly a gift for me in my journey. I love to know why I do what I do, rather than just guessing….can’t thank you enough. (Carolyn Carson)
- My husband and I would like to thank you for the Advanced DSLR Workshop yesterday. We both learned so much and thoroughly enjoyed our day. - I throughly enjoyed this course and I am looking forward to putting the things I learnt into practice. I got to understand certain aspects that I had read about on the internet but didn’t know what exactly what they were including HDR and hyper focal distance. Seng is a great teacher, with lots of knowledge and patience. (Amanda Blanksby)
- FANTASTIC Workshop. Just when I thought I knew my way around my camera, there is more. Seng has this wonderful ability to make what others seem complex into simple to understand tips and techniques that will not just improve you images but how you look at subjects and go about your photography. Don’t waste time and get on the Advanced DSLR Workshop. It’s tops!!! (Mick Lee)

- The Advanced course was excellent the other week. I put everything I learnt into practice tonight, taking shots of dogs at an obedience /agility class in really poor light conditions for their club website. If I hadn’t been to your course I wouldn’t have ended up with any usable photographs at all! Thanks again for being an awesome teacher (Steph Walker)
